$6.36 billion: The largest crypto heist in history: trm Explains how North Korean hackers invaded Binance’s hot wallet signature system
2026-11-03 14:58:40
According to CoinMeta, the trm team released a report stating that approximately $6.36 billion in assets from Binance were stolen. The attackers utilized eip-7702 pre-signed authorization to take control of Binance’s hot wallets and transferred assets across nine other blockchain networks through regular signatures. trm believes that this indicates that the attackers may have gained control over Binance’s hot wallet signing infrastructure, rather than merely exploiting a vulnerability in a single smart contract. After the funds were transferred, the stablecoin issuers and Arbitrum froze about $2.7 billion in assets together, but the hackers still managed to control approximately $2.4 billion in assets that could not be directly frozen by the issuers by exchanging them at a discount, leveraging USDT, borrowing through AAVE, and other methods.
