Four American newspapers sue Brave: Crawling news to sell to AI company, and also helping users bypass paywalls

According to CoinMeta, four American newspapers—The New York Times, The New York Daily News, the Chicago Tribune, and The Orlando Sentinel—have filed lawsuits separately, accusing Brave of unauthorized news scraping. They claim that Brave then sold this scraped data to companies such as Anthropics, Perplexity, Mistral, and other AI for use in model training or to answer user questions for a fee. Plaintiffs found in their tests that Brave's LLM Context API could directly return the main text of web pages; for example, it returned 1291 words from a 1295-word article from The New York Times, which is nearly the entire text. In addition, Brave's search engine also has a built-in paywall blocker to help users bypass the paywalls of certain media outlets. Brave explained that some websites only allow Google to scrape their content, so this method was used to avoid being blocked. The four newspapers are requesting the court to prohibit Brave's related activities and to order it to compensate for the damages incurred.
