Standard Chartered CEO: The transformation of AI intensifies "fear," and employees are not facing technological disruptions for the first time
2026-11-03 16:11:18
According to CoinMeta, Bill Winters of Standard Chartered Group CEO stated that the transformation brought about by artificial intelligence has intensified employees' "fear," and this is not the first time they have faced such technological disruptions. He pointed out that AI may replace hundreds of thousands of jobs, but Standard Chartered's current workforce remains the same as when he joined 11 years ago, at around 100,000 people. During that time, Standard Chartered has automated approximately 25,000 positions and replaced them with other roles. The bank plans to cut more than 15% of its corporate functional positions by 2030, involving about 8,000 support roles, in order to expand the practical application of AI and streamline business processes. Winters' remarks have sparked a strong backlash on social media, and as global banks utilize AI to improve productivity, several banks have already announced layoff plans.
