Zach Pandl: The Binance theft incident will prompt exchanges to strengthen security and institutional custody
2026-11-04 08:41:52
According to CoinMeta, Zach Pandl, the head of grayscale research, analyzed that in October, Binance had over $6 billion in assets stolen, setting a new record for crypto security losses in 2026 at over $8 billion. If this incident is not taken into account, the losses for 2026 would be comparable to those of last year. The proportion of crypto security losses to the total market value has been on a long-term downward trend. Binance has already restored its customers' positions, and currently, 95% of the affected assets have been replenished, with the remaining 5% taking longer to restore. Customers will not bear any losses. Approximately $2.9 billion of the stolen funds have been frozen by stablecoin issuers such as Tether and Circle, and it is expected that these funds will be returned to Binance. This incident will prompt exchanges to strengthen their security practices and raise the importance of institutional custody.
