Industry calls for temporary exemption from palm oil export duties

According to CoinMeta, industry insiders are calling on the government to temporarily suspend the 10% export tax on palm oil (CPO) as they believe this tax further weakens Malaysia's competitiveness compared to the cheaper supply from Indonesia. Estimates in the industry suggest that Indonesian CPO is 700 to 900 ringgit per ton cheaper than Malaysian CPO. Malaysia imposes a tiered export tax of 3% to 10% on CPO priced above 2250 ringgit per ton, with the current reference price being 4323.78 ringgit, and the export tax remains at 10%. Industry insiders believe that a temporary exemption could narrow this price gap, making Malaysian CPO more attractive to overseas buyers and helping to reduce domestic inventories. According to MPOB data, the country imported a total of 107,588 tons of palm oil in August and September. The Malaysian Palm Oil Refiners Association (PORAM) has been lobbying the Ministry of Plantation and Primary Industries to temporarily suspend the export tax.
