Large hedge funds warn of rising private credit risks, AI exposure and high interest rates pose concerns

According to CoinMeta, some large hedge funds around the world have warned that the risks in the private credit market are on the rise. As this asset class has come under increasing scrutiny this year, there has been more discussion about how rising interest rates will affect this market. Tony Joselov, the chief investment officer of Davidson Kempner Capital Management, stated that due to higher interest rates, slower corporate growth, and the large-scale debt maturities in 2027 and 2028, the private credit market is currently facing more serious problems than the public market. He pointed out that in the past few years, about one-third of private credit loans in the United States followed private equity capital into the software industry, further exacerbating the risks. John Elward, the chief investment officer of Sonar Asset Management, said that the cumulative default rate in the broad syndicated loan market over the past five years has exceeded the levels during the global financial crisis in 2008. The private credit market shares many of the same originators, borrowers, and alternative credit management companies as the syndicated loan market, but the borrowing enterprises in private credit are smaller in scale and carry higher risks.
