Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines joint venture SunExpress reduces capacity to cope with rising fuel costs
2026-11-04 21:01:09
According to CoinMeta, the joint venture between Lufthansa of Germany and Turkish Airlines, SunExpress, is reducing its flight capacity this winter and passing on some of the additional costs to passengers in order to mitigate the impact of rising aviation fuel prices caused by the conflicts in the Middle East. The CEO of SunExpress, Marcus Schnabel, stated that during the off-season for air travel, the company will cut the number of flight seats by about 10%, reducing the total number of seats from 5 million to 4.5 million. This reduction will be achieved by decreasing the daily flight frequency and canceling some domestic flights in Turkey. Schnabel mentioned that even after conducting hedging operations, SunExpress's fuel expenses still increased by about 200 million euros (approximately 225 million US dollars) this year, and it is expected to rise further next year.
