According to CoinMeta, Haitham Al-Ghasim, Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), stated that since 2026, international energy transportation and insurance costs have risen significantly, now exceeding one-third of the value of crude oil itself. OPEC's latest report shows that transportation costs for some routes have increased by about 12 times compared to the beginning of the year, driving up global commodity prices and inflationary pressures. Taking the ultra-large crude oil transport vessels from the Middle East to East Asia as an example, as of the end of October 2026, the transportation cost per barrel of crude oil had risen from $3.18 at the end of January to $37.13, while insurance costs had increased from $0.06 to $12.29, a rise of over 200 times. The proportion of transportation and insurance costs in the total cost of crude oil has also increased from about 5% at the beginning of the year to an average of 30% by the end of October. Al-Ghasim pointed out that maritime energy transportation is an important pillar of global energy security, and the participants in the Cooperation Declaration between OPEC and non-OPEC producing countries will continue to work towards maintaining stability in the global energy market.
