Former Glencore trader in Indonesia; nickel mining industry may face major reshuffle

According to CoinMeta, a task force in Indonesia dedicated to combating illegal occupation of forest land stated that Indonesian authorities are taking “immediate law enforcement action” against companies controlled or associated with former Glencore nickel trader Arif Kurniawan. Preliminary investigations have revealed issues with these companies regarding mining activities, licenses, and the use of forest land. Kurniawan is a prominent figure in Indonesia’s mining industry; after leaving Glencore over a decade ago, he quickly rose to become Indonesia’s largest nickel ore trader. Indonesia accounts for about 60% of the global nickel supply, so any action targeting his extensive mining network could trigger significant disruptions throughout the industry. Last year, reports indicated that in 2024, Kurniawan’s nickel trade volume accounted for approximately one-third of Indonesia’s national nickel supply. In addition, he jointly holds mining rights to at least 20 mining areas within Indonesia with a key business partner.
