ECB official Ziegmann: The likelihood of a rate hike in December is quite high
2026-11-05 19:57:15
According to CoinMeta, Klaus Ziegmann, a member of the European Central Bank (ECB) Governing Council, stated that the ECB may raise interest rates again next month, which would be the third time such a move has occurred since the outbreak of the Iran war. Ziegmann, who is in Opatija, Croatia, said that inflation continued to rise in October, and the likelihood of a rate hike in December is quite high. Following comments by ECB Governing Council member Jens Weidmann suggesting that a rate hike could occur in December if the economic situation remains unchanged, Ziegmann also sent a similar signal, implying that the ECB might raise the deposit interest rate by 25 basis points at its last monetary policy meeting in 2026. Currently, the increase in consumer prices in the eurozone has reached twice the ECB's inflation target of 2%. Although markets are betting that the ECB will further tighten monetary policy in 2027, Ziegmann refused to make a clear judgment on this, stating that it is still too early to determine what actions would be necessary at that time. He also noted that the prospects for the energy market have improved since the Democratic Party won the U.S. midterms. Ziegmann mentioned that crude oil prices have fallen by nearly 20% in the past few days, but it is still difficult to predict whether this trend will continue, whether energy prices will fall further, or whether any other unexpected situations may arise.
