Credit Agricole: The hawkish stance of the Bank of England supports the pound, but further gains are limited
2026-11-07 12:57:16
According to CoinMeta, on November 6, Banque de France reported that the Bank of England raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 4% as scheduled in November. The voting results showed that the only opposing vote came from a member who advocated for a larger rate hike, signaling a more hawkish stance. The central bank raised its inflation forecasts for this year and early next year, while also increasing its economic growth projections for 2026 and 2027, but lowered the forecast for 2028. Governor Bailey's remarks also hinted that further policy tightening could still occur in the future. However, the central bank emphasized that current interest rates are already in a restrictive range and that this is not the beginning of a new round of rate hikes. It is expected that markets will continue to incorporate expectations of further rate hikes, which may continue to support the pound, making it one of the currencies with higher yields among G10. In the short term, for the pound to strengthen further, British economic data needs to continue to exceed expectations, prompting the market to increase bets on further rate hikes ahead of time. Next week, the market will focus on the UK's September GDP data, as well as speeches by Bank of England Governor Bailey and other officials.
