SoftBank's stock price tumbled 59% due to the selling of AI, sparking credit concerns

According to CoinMeta, SoftBank's stock price fell by 10.83% during trading in Tokyo on November 6, closing at ¥3,549, due to heightened concerns regarding financing for artificial intelligence (AI). The company's five-year credit default swap spread reached 466 basis points, the highest since October 2022. Investors are weighing the rising borrowing costs against their $64.6 billion investment in OpenAI and their exposure to chip design company Arm. This decline continued the wave of selling off AI stocks following the mid-term elections in the United States. Although the election results did not directly cause SoftBank's stock price to fall, pressure in the credit market has drawn investors' close attention to SoftBank's financial condition. SoftBank has taken on more debt to finance its investments in OpenAI, and the delay in the listing of OpenAI has pushed back the expected return time to 2027. In September, SoftBank issued $11.1 billion in bonds to expand financing for these investments. Meanwhile, since the beginning of September, SoftBank's stock price has fallen by nearly half. The opening price on Friday was at the same level as its 52-week low, with a 52-week high of ¥9,074. SoftBank's stock price has become a market barometer for the prospects of AI investments, reflecting its investments in OpenAI, Arm, and SB Energy.
