European Space Agency: International research team discovers signs of volcanic activity on Mars

According to CoinMeta, the European Space Agency recently announced that an international research team, using data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volcanism Mission satellite, has discovered abnormal distributions of hydrogen chloride gas and surface fissures in the Alba Montes region of Mars. This indicates that there may still be heat within Mars that supports volcanic activity. The research team published a paper in the latest issue of the American journal Science Advances, stating that the concentration of hydrogen chloride in Mars' atmosphere typically peaks in the northern hemisphere during winter and virtually disappears in summer. However, above certain fissures in Alba Montes, a abnormal peak in hydrogen chloride concentration was observed in early summer in the northern hemisphere. Researchers speculate that gas released from underground magma may be escaping through these fissures; the severe cold in winter freezes the fissures, but as the ice melts in early summer, the gas may begin to escape again. The researchers believe that if lava meets groundwater, it could create local environments that are warm and suitable for life to exist, so they plan to attempt to search for signs of Martian life in the fissures where gas is escaping in the Alba Montes area.
