Bittensor was founded in 2019 by Jacob Robert Steeves, a former Google software engineer, and Ala Shaabana. The project operated under the pseudonym Yuma Rao, drawing parallels to Bitcoin's Satoshi Nakamoto. Eric Tang, co-founder of Livepeer, serves as a core developer. The team combines deep expertise in artificial intelligence, distributed systems, and blockchain technology, headquartered in Toronto, Canada.

The project launched in 2019 and transitioned to the Nakamoto mainnet in November 2021 via a hard fork, migrating all 546,113 previously mined TAO to the new chain starting from block 0. In December 2025, Bittensor completed its first halving, reducing daily TAO issuance from 7,200 to 3,600. Grayscale subsequently launched a regulated Bittensor Trust, marking a significant institutional milestone, and the network achieved SEC Reporting Company status.

Bittensor is built on the Substrate framework as an independent Layer-1 blockchain, providing greater flexibility than its original parachain ambitions. The network utilizes the Yuma Consensus mechanism to evaluate and reward AI model contributions. It supports multiple subnets that compete within the ecosystem, with miners earning TAO by providing valuable machine learning outputs and validators securing the network through staking.

TAO features a fixed total supply with an inflationary issuance model that decreases through scheduled halvings, mirroring Bitcoin's scarcity mechanism. Tokens are distributed through staking rewards, subnet incentives, and registration burns. Significant burn mechanisms permanently remove TAO from circulation when miners or validators pay registration fees. The dTAO dashboard provides transparent on-chain visibility into supply emissions and distribution dynamics.

Bittensor employs on-chain governance where TAO holders participate in network decisions through staking and voting mechanisms. However, the network has faced centralization critiques, including public accusations from former contributor Sam Dare labeling the project a decentralization performance. Governance disputes have occasionally triggered price volatility. The dTAO token extends governance participation within the broader ecosystem.

Bittensor operates at the model layer of AI infrastructure, differentiating it from computing-power networks like Render or Akash. Its subnets cover diverse AI applications including inference, DePIN, and specialized machine learning tasks. The ecosystem has seen launches of models like Covenant-72B. Subnet tokens have rallied alongside TAO, and the network's on-chain data demonstrates genuine decentralized AI activity with thousands of daily active participants engaging stake operations and alpha generation.
