British Chancellor of the Exchequer John Hilley seems to have publicly criticized Reform Party leader Nigel Farage's use of Bitcoin.
In a speech on Monday, the Chancellor of the Exchequer stated that Farage, the member of parliament who supports cryptocurrencies, is "a Liz Truss with a Bitcoin account."
Farage currently leads the Reform Party, which has seen a continuous rise in support rates, but has recently come under criticism for accepting donations from entrepreneurs in the cryptocurrency industry. Liz Truss, on the other hand, is the British prime minister with the shortest tenure; she has been heavily criticized for the "mini-budget" implemented in 2022, which relied on borrowing.
Hillie said, "Nigel Farage – he wants you to feel like you're one of the people. But when it comes to economics, he's just Liz Truss with a Bitcoin account."
Hilli subsequently stated that the government led by his Labour Party would help the UK take the lead through "fiscal discipline, good work, and a strong industry."
His remarks were criticized by the Bitcoin community on platform X, with many questioning what exactly "Bitcoin account" means.
An account with the ID Simply Bitcoin on Platform X wrote: "Obviously, 'Bitcoin account' has now become a term in common usage. It's truly unbelievable that one of the rulers of the UK would say such a thing."
Farage, who has populist tendencies, has long been a political figure in support of cryptocurrencies. Since 2020, he has primarily described Bitcoin as a matter of personal freedom and opposition to state control over money.
Farage also mentioned that he had his banking services cancelled by the British private bank Coutts, which piqued his interest in digital assets even more.
Just last year, at the Bitcoin 2025 conference held in Las Vegas, he stated that if elected as the next Prime Minister, he would significantly reduce the capital gains tax on cryptocurrencies and force the Bank of England to establish a Bitcoin reserve.
This year, Farage has also been criticized for accepting millions of dollars in cryptocurrency donations. Donors included tech entrepreneur, Tether investor Christopher Harperon, as well as Ben Delo, one of the co-founders of the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX.
The Metropolitan Police has launched an investigation into reports that the Reform Party has violated regulations regarding overseas donations. The Reform Party denies any improper conduct and states that it will cooperate with the investigation.
