OpenAI announced the launch of Dots at the Dev Day event on Tuesday. This is a new personal assistant driven by GPT-6 and Astra. The company describes Dots as an assistant that is “outstanding in capability, always online, and capable of handling all tasks.”

Unlike Codex or ChatGPT, Dots is designed to operate independently of any specific hardware or interface, continuously advancing the goals set by the user in the background with almost no need for supervision.

OpenAI stated in the announcement: "Today, you can start from your main dot, give it a name, and make it your own. Over time, we envision a group of Dots working together on your behalf."

Dots will be available starting from Tuesday at ChatGPT, targeting Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. Users can initiate Dots from Codex or ChatGPT.

In the announcement, OpenAI envisioned various ways to use Dots. One scenario is that software developers deploy a dedicated dot to monitor customer feedback and implement bug fixes and required functions when necessary; another scenario is that scientists use a dot to rerun analyses upon the arrival of experimental data and to investigate unexpected results.

Users can send messages to Dots through Slack, Teams, and other organizational platforms, and SMS support is also about to be launched.

OpenAI also envisions the establishment of "dedicated Dots" to undertake specific responsibilities. A single Dots can be configured with a specific identity, credentials, and tools through the existing system. OpenAI is also collaborating with Microsoft to integrate it into the company's Agent 365 security control framework.

Many of these functions could already be implemented through Codex and similar proxy frameworks before, but Dots packages these functions into a new product, with a focus on independent proxy actions.

This brand packaging also presents a bubble-like, cartoonish design, similar to the Muse agent recently launched by Meta. Dots looks like... little dots. These floating cartoon characters are a revision of the OpenAI software and also represent the latest attempt by the company to make AI more approachable.
