IT Home News on October 1st: Videocardz has discovered today that a GitHub project named d4r has brought NVIDIA DLSS 4 and DLSS 4.5 super-resolution support to the AMD Radeon RX 9000 series of graphics cards.
IT's research reveals that this project was released by developer countervolts. Its purpose is to enable AMD graphics cards to run NVIDIA DLSS libraries through a software translation layer. The first version was released 4 days ago, and today the latest 0.1.3 version has been published.

d4r The project has previously supported RDNA 3rd-generation architecture RX 7000 series graphics cards. The latest versions 0.1.2 and 0.1.3 will expand this support to RDNA 4th-generation architecture, covering models such as Radeon RX 9070, XT 9070, RX 9070, GRE 9070, RX 9060, XT 9060, and RX 9060, among others.
The core principle of this project is to utilize the ZLUDA compatibility layer to translate the CUDA calls in the DLSS library into AMD GPU executable instructions. It also works in conjunction with the self-developed RDNA architectural kernel to replace some high-load computations. The RDNA and GPU components are capable of natively handling the FP8 matrix operations required by the new version of the DLSS model; therefore, there is no need to convert FP8 to FP16.

However, this project is still in the early experimental stage. Developers stated that so far, actual tests have only been conducted on RX 7700 XT ( RDNA 3). On RX 7700 XT, DLSS 4.5 runs at only 49.3 frames per second in the 1440p quality mode of "Silent Hill: Townfall", which is lower than the 68.1 frames per second of DLSS 4 and the 71.9 frames per second of DLSS 3, and also falls behind the 76 frames per second of FSR 4.
In addition, d4r currently only supports super-resolution functionality and does not support frame generation, light reconstruction, or DLSS 5-neural rendering. This project also relies on Linux and Proton environments and cannot run under Windows.
