Microsoft held an event in San Francisco, California on Wednesday to officially launch the Surface Laptop Ultra equipped with NVIDIA chips.
The starting price of this laptop is $2,599. It features a NVIDIA RTX Spark processor based on the ARM architecture, and is known for its AI computing power, video processing capabilities, and gaming performance. It is designed to compete with Apple's MacBook Pro, and it is also Microsoft's most powerful Surface device to date.
Microsoft Windows Executive Vice President of the Devices Division, Pawan Dawuluri, stated that this chip is equipped with up to 128GB of unified memory and can run large models AI that are difficult for other laptops to handle.
Tom Menelli, Vice President of the Device and Consumer Research Group at IDC, believes that Surface Laptop Ultra is very likely to attract early adopters from both the consumer and enterprise segments.
In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Meneli stated, "Ultimately, price is a key factor. However, users will also reach a point where they need to decide which data to upload to the cloud and which to keep locally, and that's when they will consider the task orchestration layer."
Task orchestration refers to deciding which AI models to invoke, when to invoke them, and for what tasks. For example, if a free model available locally on the computer can complete a certain task, there is no need to invoke expensive cloud-based large models such as OpenAI GPT-6 Astra.
At the launch event on Wednesday, Microsoft Windows and the Executive Vice President of the Devices Division announced that Microsoft will bring hybrid AI capabilities as well as AI intelligent entity security protection features to Windows through a series of system updates.
Enterprises and the consumer technology industry are vigorously developing local AI models as an alternative to cloud models and agents, which has also kicked off a new round of technological competition in the notebook and desktop computer sectors.
During the pre-market trading session on Thursday, Microsoft's stock price rose by 0.2%, while NVIDIA's stock price fell by 0.6%.
