Meeting minutes tool Otter.ai announced on Tuesday that it has raised $320 million from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund ( CVF ). This fund provides funding for startups without diluting equity and generates returns through the effectiveness of marketing expenditures.
Otter.ai indicates that this funds will be used for corporate growth, market entry strategies, international expansion, and product innovation.
This startup was founded nearly a decade ago. According to PitchBook data, its total financing amount is 50 million US dollars, with the last round of financing occurring in 2021.
Last year, Otter reached a revenue milestone after its annual recurring income (ARR) exceeded $100 million. The company stated that it is now approaching a new milestone, but did not disclose the updated specific figures.
The company stated that as of now, 40 million users have used their product, which is higher than last year's 25 million. However, in the highly competitive environment of meeting recording tools, a key challenge faced by Otter is to retain customers on a long-term basis. Unfortunately, this startup company did not provide data on monthly active users or churn rates.
Pranav Singhvi, co-partner and co-founder of General Catalyst, stated: "Voice is one of the largest untapped opportunities in the field of AI for enterprises, and Otter is at the forefront of this area – this belief has only strengthened after witnessing the growth of Otter. When Otter helps enterprises capture key voice data and convert it into actionable business insights, the team progresses faster, decisions are more precise, and productivity continues to accumulate throughout the organization. This is also why it has become a strong partner of CVF."
The market competition is fierce, with well-funded meeting recording tools including Fireflies.ai, Granola, and Read AI; new entrants include Calendly, Wispr, as well as Superhuman which acquired Fathom; in addition, there are other products such as Circleback, Talat, and Quill.
Most of these meeting recording tools aim to integrate with enterprise systems and automate work processes based on the data captured during meetings. Otter is also developing in this direction. Over the past few years, the company has launched a meeting assistant, cross-application search functionality, as well as integrations with other AI tools.
Otter The new Chief Marketing Officer, Alex Gay, previously worked at Superhuman. Last month, during a speech at the HumanX conference, he stated in an interview with TechCrunch that the company has seen a huge opportunity to transform transcribed content into an actionable roadmap suitable for people who attend many conferences.
He said, "When we start to think about the truly bigger issues that people are facing today, we see a huge pain point in positions that involve frequent meetings. People are constantly attending one meeting after another. These meetings are essentially their work. Whether it's customer communication or from a sales perspective, strategies are discussed during these meetings. However, the efficiency of these meetings is very low because when you join a meeting, you often have to spend the first 20 minutes reviewing what was said before so that everyone can keep up with the progress."
The company is currently trying to provide insights before, during, and after meetings. It has been testing a feature that sends users pre-meeting briefings containing details and background information, combined with historical conversation context across different scenarios. In addition, the company is also experimenting with the Live Assist feature, allowing users to ask questions to the AI assistant during the meeting to gain knowledge.
