A General Motors spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the company will close its Browns敦 battery assembly plant located south of Detroit. The company stated that this move is not related to its electric vehicle strategy, but mainly due to the upcoming expiration of the lease for the site; the relevant employees and work will be transferred to other General Motors facilities.

A spokesperson for General Motors confirmed to TechCrunch that the company will close a battery assembly plant located south of Detroit.

Browndown Battery Assembly Plant previously assembled battery packs for Cadillac's flagship electric vehicle Celestiq, and also assembled two sets of electric drive units (i.e., the motors that provide power to the vehicle) and battery packs for the Chevrolet Corvette E - Ray – the plug-in hybrid version of this renowned sports car. Automotive News was the first to report this closure news.

The spokesperson stated that this closure has nothing to do with General Motors' electric vehicle strategy. On the contrary, General Motors is renting the facility, and the lease is nearing its expiration.

Employees and related operations at Brownstown will be transferred to other General Motors facilities, although the company has not confirmed which specific plants they will be moved to.

Like many automobile manufacturers, General Motors' electrification strategy also encountered unexpected changes after the federal comprehensive act One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which was signed into law last year, abolished incentives for the production and sale of electric vehicles.

Thereafter, the company reduced the frequency of publicly discussing electric vehicles, but it did not abandon its goal of full electrification.

General Motors is still producing a range of electric vehicles, including the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the limited-time supply of the Chevrolet Bolt. The company is also continuing to research new battery chemistries, including lithium-rich manganese and sodium-ion batteries, and is advancing a new facility worth $900 million to accelerate the commercialization process.
