Securly AI Governance now allows school districts to control the AI generated answers that students see in Google searches.
Charlotte, North Carolina, November 4, 2026 / PRNewswire / -- K-12 A provider of digital safety and health services for students, Securly, announced today that the " Restrict AI Mode (Restricted AI Mode)" setting previously available in Securly Filter could now also block AI Overview. With this setting enabled, students will see standard Google search results instead of summaries generated by AI, allowing school districts to decide when students can view answers written by AI.
Google will display content generated by AI in two places: one is AI Mode, which provides a chat-style search experience; the other is AI Overview, where it automatically appears as an excerpt at the top of search results tagged with All. Since AI Overview also appears in regular searches, even if schools block the AI tool, students may still see answers generated by AI. Securly indicates that when Restrict AI Mode is enabled, Securly Filter will hide AI Mode and AI Overview based on the filtering method, and/or redirect students away from these functions. Other Google search options, such as images, videos, and news, can still be used, and SafeSearch settings are not affected either.
Securly Chief Technology Officer Spence Mallder stated: "Since Google introduced AI summaries, school districts that wish to restrict the use of AI have had to take time out of their work to serve students in order to find solutions to block this feature. Search engines should not decide when AI appears in front of students; it should be up to the school districts to decide."
He also stated, "This update allows schools that have already blocked AI to continue doing so, and it also enables schools that are ready to open this feature for classes in need."
Administrators can enable or disable this setting according to their policies within Filter Policy Editor. School districts may disable the Google AI feature for lower-grade students while making it available for higher-grade classes, and they can adjust this decision as their own AI guiding principles evolve.
Regarding the AI tools allowed for use in school district selection, Securly indicates that Securly AI Transparency enables administrators to view students' usage of these tools on Gemini, ChatGPT, and other educational technology AI tools. Administrators can view usage by school, grade, or classroom, set protection rules for AI conversations, and mark suspicious conversations that require review.
According to Securly, from December 2025 to October 2026, AI Transparency provided visualization capabilities for over 6.2 million student AI conversations to 1,806 school districts in 39 states.
