According to CoinMeta, officials in Plattsburgh are considering implementing a 12-month ban on new and expanded cryptocurrency mining, artificial intelligence, and other high-energy computing facilities. Mayor Wendell Hughes introduced the local bill on August 20th. A public hearing was held on September 3rd, but the proposed ban has not yet been passed. The measure will cover commercial facilities primarily used for cryptocurrency mining, blockchain verification, artificial intelligence computing, machine learning, cloud computing, digital asset processing, server farms, and colocation services. According to municipal regulations, restricted facilities must require high-density load services or have a minimum power demand of at least 300 kilowatts. The bill will temporarily prevent city departments from granting land use approvals for these high-energy facilities. Existing legal facilities can continue to operate during the ban period, but they are not allowed to expand or significantly increase their power demand.
