According to CoinMeta, OpenAI just launched the permanent agent “Dots” on DevDay, but they don’t have control over the two most suitable com domain names. The DOT.com domain name currently belongs to XAI; when opened, it directly redirects to Grok. The dots.com domain name, which is more fitting for the product name, also doesn’t belong to OpenAI. Public records show that there was a transfer of whois in July this year, about two months before the official launch of Dots. After the news surfaced, the community speculated that XAI might have preempted the registration, but there is currently no evidence to prove that they knew in advance that this name would be used. The history of dots.com is even more intriguing; it originally belonged to an American women’s clothing chain Dots and was sold for $335,000 to an undisclosed individual buyer during its bankruptcy liquidation in 2014. Since then, the actual holder has never been publicly confirmed. As a result, just as OpenAI launched Dots, the two most logical com entry points are now in the hands of others, with one of them even directing traffic to competitors.
