Illinois delays implementation of controversial crypto tax due to industry litigation
2026-10-02 00:20:01
According to CoinMeta, the Illinois state government has agreed to postpone the implementation date of the digital asset tax from January 1, 2027, to July 1, subject to the signature of a judge for approval. This move stems from a lawsuit filed by the Digital Business Association and the Illinois Blockchain Association against State Tax Commissioner David Harris and Attorney General Kwame Rawool. Although the postponement does not resolve the case, industry groups are still challenging the constitutionality and enforceability of the tax. The bill was signed into law in June 2026 by Governor JB Pritzker and imposes a 0.2% tax on crypto activities, which is expected to generate $60 million in revenue for the state government in 2027.
