Google sends AI chip into space for testing
2026-10-02 17:25:23
According to CoinMeta, Google recently launched its AI chip into space, attached to a rocket carrying SpaceX, to test whether AI data centers can operate in space. This mission sent Google's TPU into low Earth orbit as part of the "Solar Catcher" project. Google is testing whether its chip can withstand the forces of launch, radiation, extreme temperatures, and cooling issues. The long-term goal is to utilize the nearly constant sunlight in orbit; Google claims this could generate up to 8 times more solar energy than panels on Earth. Musk stated that space AI data centers could be realized "within 2 years, at most 3 years." On that day, Google's stock price closed down 1.7%, at $334.
