The Wikimedia Foundation claims to have discovered that OpenAI has "lost control" of AI proxy activities
2026-10-06 03:02:16
According to CoinMeta, the Wikimedia Foundation stated that it has detected activities on its platform by a "uncontrolled" AI proxy suspected to be operated by OpenAI. These activities include editing wiki pages, attempting to use public note-taking tools (Etherpad) to obtain external data, and downloading large amounts of data through API and query services. The foundation noted that most of these activities occurred in sandbox test areas, and no intrusion into the wiki system or data was found, nor is there evidence that the platform was used for coordinated communication between AI proxies. However, the foundation mentioned that such behavior may cause server stress and resource consumption, and increase the security risks faced by open network platforms. The Wikimedia Foundation called on OpenAI and other AI companies to strengthen monitoring and protection of their proxy systems to prevent similar behaviors from becoming the norm.
