Polymarket: South Korea blocks platform due to concerns over market manipulation

According to CoinMeta, South Korean media regulatory authorities have blocked the platform due to concerns that the winner-takes-all market structure of Polymarket could lead to an illegal gambling environment. The Korea Communications Standards Commission voted on August 18 to restrict Polymarket, arguing that its use in areas such as politics, elections, sports, and weather could encourage gambling. This move has increased regulatory pressure on prediction markets, and access for South Korean users has been blocked. This decision poses new regulatory challenges for Polymarket and coincides with similar actions taken by other countries. France blocked Polymarket on July 16, stating that the platform could expose users to significant losses or the risk of gambling manipulation. Australia and Germany also blocked the platform in August and September 2025. Polymarket claims that its structure is non-hosted and peer-to-peer, but regulatory decisions indicate that how the platform handles user funds is not the only factor considered. The ban may make it more difficult for South Korean users to access the platform and participate in these markets.
