US SEC Regulatory Power Shifts to Republicans, Possibly Accelerating the Formulation of Crypto Regulations
2026-10-08 21:00:30
According to CoinMeta, with Hester Pierce officially leaving the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 2nd, the commission is now down to just two members, and regulatory power has shifted to the Republicans. Previously, Democratic members Hamie Lissagarra and Carolyn Crenshaw had also resigned. The current chairman, Paul Atkins, and member Mark Uyeda are both Republicans. Atkins was nominated by Trump, and Uyeda was appointed as acting chairman by Trump before Atkins was confirmed. This change marks a significant shift from the era of Gary Gensler, who is widely viewed as having an adversarial attitude towards the crypto industry. The smaller Atkins-Uyeda team may take faster action regarding tokenization, custody, and clearer crypto regulations.
