According to CoinMeta, Ethereum researcher Justin Drake warns that AI could potentially crack encryption technologies before quantum computers become a reality, and might even achieve this within just a few months. He calls on the industry to begin planning for what is known as a “refuge mode,” suggesting the migration of assets to new addresses that have never been used for transactions in order to protect users’ encrypted assets. Drake points out that the structure of ECDSA’s encryption systems could be exploited by super intelligent systems, while the hash algorithms used to hide public keys are designed to resist such attacks. He also mentions that platforms such as Binance, Bitbank, Robinhood, Bitfinex, and Tether should enhance the security of their cold storage practices.
