According to CoinMeta, the Japanese yen stablecoin issuer jpyc provided information to the Japan Fair Trade Commission on September 14, explaining the compliance and cost advantages of stablecoin payments in the competition with cashless payments. Since its launch in October 2025, jpyc has been used in over 150 stores. Since value transfers are completed directly through blockchain, no franchise fees are charged to the stores, resulting in lower costs than existing cashless payment methods. Some stores wish to pass on these cost savings to customers using jpyc, but they are concerned about violating terms in credit card franchise agreements that prohibit cash discounts, among other things. jpyc believes that it is up to the stores to decide which payment methods to accept and how to price them. A 2022 report by the Fair Trade Commission pointed out that uniformly prohibiting such practices may constitute an anti-monopoly issue under certain circumstances.
