Card-based checkout is dead; alternative payment methods have completed 191 million transactions

CoinMeta data: According to Forkast, the card-based checkout model was discontinued in March 2026, and it was replaced by two native alternative payment mechanisms for stablecoins: the x402 protocol and the machine payment protocol ( MPP ). As of October 11, 2026, x402 had recorded 1,917,515,988 transactions across 12 chains. Coinbase reports that in the second quarter of 2026, over 97% of on-chain proxy transactions used x402. Although approximately 25-30% of these activities may have been tests or noise from ranking systems, the reusability of x402 significantly reduced transaction friction, contributing to an increase in transaction volume. Meanwhile, MPP, launched in March 2026 by Stripe and Tempo, reported 46,198 cumulative events, mainly targeting enterprise-level, high-trust transactions.
