South Korea's first traditional bank launches Bitcoin mortgage loans
2026-10-12 19:00:16
CoinMeta Data: Jeonju Bank of Korea ( Jeonbuk Bank ) has begun offering Bitcoin mortgage loans to corporate customers, becoming the first bank in the country to allow businesses to use cryptocurrencies as collateral for loans. The bank will disburse loans in Korean won, and the funds will be limited to corporate operating costs. An official from Jeonju Bank confirmed that a loan has been granted, but did not disclose the name of the borrower. Currently, only Bitcoin ( BTC ) can be used as collateral, and Jeonju Bank will not hold Bitcoin itself; instead, registered crypto service providers will custody the assets. If the borrower fails to repay the loan, the bank will enforce the sale of Bitcoin through the courts to recover the funds. This process is based on revised civil enforcement rules that came into effect on October 1st, which specify the legal procedures for seizing and selling digital assets. Jeonju Bank conducted stress tests to assess Bitcoin's performance during sharp price drops and chose Bitcoin as collateral due to its high liquidity, which facilitates liquidation when needed. This service aligns the bank's products with the trend of Bitcoin mortgages gradually becoming a mainstream source of credit.
