Coinbase: Call on Bitcoin developers to initiate quantum migration as soon as possible
2026-10-15 00:17:22
According to CoinMeta, Coinbase is calling on Bitcoin developers to start preparing for the threat of quantum computing as soon as possible, presenting a detailed technical checklist that emphasizes the need to begin this work without waiting until the threat becomes certain. Coinbase states that transitioning to quantum-safe cryptography is a complex, multi-year task that must be initiated immediately. The company warns that waiting for announcements of quantum computers capable of cracking Bitcoin signatures will leave developers with too little time to respond. Coinbase emphasizes that any transition needs to protect both existing and newly created coins, adapt to Bitcoin’s limited block space, and provide a migration path for immovable coins. The company also proposes a flexible “container” design that allows for the gradual introduction of new post-quantum signature systems without the need for a complete overhaul.
