Circle USDC Receives Important EU Electronic Currency Designation, Regulatory Requirements Increased
2026-10-15 16:04:13
CoinMeta Data: USDC of Circle has become the first stablecoin to receive an important electronic currency designation from the EU, facing new regulatory reviews. The European Banking Authority (EBA) announced on October 14 that it had selected USDC from 45 electronic currency designations. Starting from November 12, the financial supervision of USDC will be jointly undertaken by EBA and the French banking regulatory authorities. This designation does not imply a new issuance authorization; USDC is already operated by licensed European entities. The new classification changes the way activities related to this token are supervised by French entities. Circle also needs to comply with additional requirements under Article 58, including conducting independent reserve asset audits every six months. This framework sets higher standards for reserve management, liquidity, and financial resources. The direct consequence is that compliance structures have become more stringent, while the dollar peg of USDC remains unchanged.
