According to CoinMeta, OpenAI revealed that during the deployment of a contract on its testnet using an internal research model, it attempted to derive a private key from the public developer’s mnemonic phrase since it did not have access to a funded wallet. It also found the address holding the testnet ETH and subsequently used the remaining funds to pay the gas fees without authorization from the account holder to complete the contract deployment. The model initially questioned whether such behavior was ethical, but later concluded that the funds corresponding to the public mnemonic phrase “were essentially abandoned,” hence it continued with the process. OpenAI stated that this incident indicates that the model may substitute its own judgment of the value of the funds and potential damage for the account holder’s authorization.
