Sweden pushes for legislation on the digital krona, while the ECB plans to launch a euro pilot in 2027

CoinMeta data: The Swedish Central Bank has urged legislators to prepare legislation for a digital krona, as the European Central Bank is nearing the testing of its own digital currency, raising concerns about the future use of Sweden's currency by external stablecoins. In a letter to the Parliament's Finance Committee on October 7th, the Swedish Central Bank stated that Sweden should begin reviewing the legal changes required for a potential central bank digital currency (_CBDC), although no decision has yet been made regarding its introduction. Officials estimate that it will take at least five years to develop and launch a digital krona, and additional time will be needed for legislative changes. This recommendation stems from a government survey in 2023 that found insufficient public demand for the country to issue a digital currency. Since then, the progress of the digital euro and the growing use of stablecoins have prompted the central bank to reconsider Sweden's stance. According to the proposal, Swedish legislators will first review the legislation necessary to allow the Swedish Central Bank to issue a digital version of the national currency.
