CoinMeta data: A scammer who deceived job seekers by offering fake online jobs lost over $4.9 million in Bitcoin due to a security vulnerability in a Ledger hardware wallet. Blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis stated that the scammer collected Bitcoin through so-called task scams, where victims were initially paid to post fake product reviews or boost online sales. Later, they were informed that their accounts had negative balances and were required to deposit their own funds before they could withdraw the purported earnings. Chainalysis indicated that the scammer transferred the proceeds from these illegal activities to three Ledger wallet addresses, which were later emptied by thieves, resulting in a loss of about 60 Bitcoins. This incident adds new complexity to the Ledger security vulnerability, as investigators discovered unauthorized hardware implants in some devices that allowed the transmission of wallet recovery information over mobile networks, enabling attackers to access the Bitcoin stored on the affected devices.
