CoinMeta data: Questions arise as to whether the Ledger wallet received any tampering alerts before the $86 million hacker attack. The former Gox CEO Mark Karpel stated that the manufacturer was aware of suspicious devices several months before the October incident. Security researcher Joe Grand discovered a tampered Ledger Nano X wallet in March 2026. Investigations revealed unauthorized hardware modifications on devices distributed to Southeast Asia, with initial reported losses exceeding $86 million, and subsequent estimates exceeding $103 million. Sales of the Ledger wallet to regional distributors have been suspended, and the investigation is still ongoing. Karpel pointed out that the manufacturer began receiving reports about tampered hardware wallets in December 2025, but no Ledger public warnings were issued regarding this. On-chain researchers reported that attackers stole over $103.4 million from 530 cryptocurrency addresses.
