According to CoinMeta, and as reported by Yonhap News, the South Korean government plans to convene representatives from five major cryptocurrency exchanges – upbit, bithumb, coinone, digitalx, and gopax – as well as daxa on October 20 to discuss the cryptocurrency asset taxation system that was originally scheduled to be implemented in 2027. This system proposes to levy a 22% tax on taxable earnings from cryptocurrency assets, and its implementation has been postponed three times previously. The industry believes that the taxation standards and tax infrastructure for transactions such as staking, airdrops, and DEFI are not yet fully established, and is calling for another postponement. Park Min-kyu, a member of the Democratic Party, has submitted a amendment to push back the taxation deadline to an estimated 2029. Currently, the government is still proceeding with preparations according to the 2027 schedule and has not decided to postpone it again.
