BIS Economist: Banks Have an Influential Role in the Adoption of Stablecoins
2026-10-18 21:02:53
According to CoinMeta, economists from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) pointed out that banks have a certain influence in the adoption of stablecoins. Research shows that when banks raise deposit interest rates, the growth rate of stablecoins slows down. According to the studies by BIS economists Iñigo López de Arce, David Liptak, and others, the capitalization of the stablecoin market increased by about 15% within a typical 10-week period. However, for every one basis point increase in deposit interest rates, the growth rate of stablecoins drops to around 12%. In another approach, this growth rate decreases to about 6%. The research also found a closer link between certain factors. The paper suggests that regulators should consider whether stablecoin issuers can pay yields to holders, while weighing the pros and cons of requiring issuers to keep a portion of their reserves in bank deposits.
