According to CoinMeta, California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued a warning about cryptocurrency fraud on October 19th, stating that in 2025, online fraud in the United States resulted in losses of $20.9 billion, of which $11.4 billion was due to cryptocurrency fraud. The fraud methods included AI deep forgery, fake liquidity mining, malicious smart contracts, and investment scams, among others. Bonta mentioned that the recently signed SB 1208 bill in California allows law enforcement agencies to return fraudulent cryptocurrency assets seized during criminal investigations to victims through court proceedings, even if the suspects are outside of U.S. jurisdiction and cannot be convicted. In recent years, the California Department of Justice has shut down more than 100 fraud websites, involving losses of at least $8.3 million.
