After acquiring AI programming tools and Cursor's parent company, OpenAI plans to end its model collaboration with that platform. This change does not mean that Cursor will cease to operate, but it indicates that the competition in the AI developer tool market is shifting from mere model integration to a more direct struggle for platforms and ecosystems.

OpenAI plans to terminate cooperation in November

OpenAI stated on August 28th that it had notified SpaceX about its plan to gradually terminate the agreement with Cursor, with a scheduled deadline of November 12, 2026. The company mentioned that the decision was prompted by a change in control rights and concerns regarding whether SpaceX would comply with the terms of the contract.

OpenAI also stated that Cursor itself has not been accused of violating any agreements. The company mentioned that other companies controlled by Musk have had past controversies, and this termination is based on the cancellation clause that can be activated in the contract after the completion of the acquisition according to SpaceX.

SpaceX Completes Acquisition of Parent Company

Cursor's parent company, Anysphere, completed the merger with SpaceX in August. According to reports, this transaction was a full-stock acquisition concluded earlier this year, valued at approximately $60 billion. On August 14th, Cursor confirmed that the platform has officially become a business under SpaceX.

This acquisition also further extends the business territory of SpaceX. In addition to rockets, satellites, and infrastructure, the company has begun to enter the enterprise-level AI software sector. The article mentions that after SpaceX went public in June, the market gave a high valuation to its AI strategic expansion.

Cursor can still be integrated with other models.

Even if OpenAI exits, Cursor can still continue to use the services of other model providers. The platform currently supports models from multiple companies such as Anthropic and Google. After being acquired by SpaceX, it is also closer to the infrastructure of AI within Musk's ecosystem.

Reuters previously cited the statement of Cursor, co-founder Michael Truell, stating that discussions with OpenAI are still ongoing. Meanwhile, Anthropic plans to expand the scope of support for Claude on Cursor.

On the other hand, OpenAI is increasing its investment in its own programming proxy product, Codex. This product is positioned as a code writing and editing tool that can handle larger codebases and undertake more automated software engineering tasks.

Overall, the focus of this event is not just the end of a collaboration, but rather the changing relationships in the upstream and downstream of the AI industry chain. Model companies hope to reach developers directly, while application platforms are reducing their dependence on a single model supplier. As Cursor is incorporated into the SpaceX system, the relationship between the two parties has also shifted from that of customer and supplier to that of potential competitors.
