Coinbase plans to rename Base App back to Coinbase Wallet. The focus of the product will also shift from its previous "all-in-one application" approach, which emphasized social features, to a more direct multi-chain trading interface. This adjustment comes at a time when the popularity of Robinhood Chain is on the rise, reflecting the platform's renewed emphasis on cross-chain asset coverage and trading experience.
Focus back on multi-chain transactions
This adjustment is about 14 months away from Base App making its debut in July 2025. At that time, Coinbase attempted to expand the wallet into a product that integrated encrypted transactions, social features, messaging, AI tools, and creator monetization. Today, the company hopes to use the more familiar brand of Coinbase Wallet to carry out its cross-chain transaction strategy.
Coinbase Wallet, the product leader, and Ryan Kass stated that the name change reflects that the product scope is no longer limited to Base, but has expanded into a multi-chain trading platform. According to him, users wish to trade more types of assets through the same interface, without being restricted by chain or asset category.
- Supports Hyperliquid perpetual contracts
- Expand to other networks such as Solana.
- Promote multi-chain tokenized stock trading
Competition with Robinhood intensifies
This name change also occurred during the period of rising popularity for Robinhood Chain. Kass stated that Coinbase Wallet will continue to provide access to Robinhood Chain, while retaining the advantages of Base in terms of speed and low fees. He believes that the popularity of different chains and assets will cycle, and platforms should not limit users to a single ecosystem.
In Coinbase, it seems that whoever can offer a wider range of assets and more flexible trading pathways will have a better chance of retaining users. Coinbase Wallet is therefore positioned as a more open front-end entry point, allowing users to decide for themselves where to complete their transactions.
Continue to assume the role of a testing ground.
Coinbase also regards Coinbase Wallet as a product testing ground. Some assets and trading experiences that have not yet been launched on the retail side of the Coinbase main website are often first introduced in the wallet, and then extended to a wider range of retail products depending on the situation.
This means that Coinbase Wallet is not just a self-hosted wallet, but also serves as a testing platform for new assets and features. For Coinbase, this helps to respond more quickly to on-chain transaction needs without changing the main website's positioning.
Although the name has reverted to Coinbase Wallet, Coinbase indicates that the investment in Base has not been reduced. The wallet will continue to distribute assets, the community, and related functions on the Base network. This change is more like a recalibration of the brand and product focus, rather than a withdrawal from the Base strategy.
