A federal jury in San Diego ruled on Friday that Taction Technology was awarded over $5.7 billion in damages. The jury found that Apple had infringed upon relevant claims in two tactile technology patents.

Taction filed a lawsuit against Apple in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California in 2021. According to the complaint, the company accused Apple of improperly "taking advantage of the innovation and success of Taction" by selling devices that infringed upon its vibration technology. Apple initially won a dismissal ruling in 2023, but the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals later reinstated the case.

Apple stated in its declaration regarding Bloomberg Law that it will appeal against this ruling and claimed that "it did not use the technology of Taction."

Representatives from Apple and Taction did not immediately respond to the comment request from CNBC.

This lawsuit revolves around U.S. patent numbers 10,659,885 and 10,820,117, both of which involve vibration-based tactile transducer technology that helps users perceive the device's response to inputs. Taction believes that Apple has embedded Apple Watch and iPhone's “Taptic Engine” without proper permission or authorization, using their inventions.

The jury trial began on September 14th, and the seven jurors deliberated for two days after the court proceedings concluded. At 1:15 p.m. on Friday, Pacific Time, they returned to the court and rendered a verdict in favor of Taction.

The jury did not determine that Apple's infringement was intentional.
