An industry alliance supported by tech giants such as Google, Meta, and Microsoft is about to announce a series of commitments in order to defuse the opposition to AI data centers in American society. This issue has become an important focus of the mid-term elections in November.

The AI Infrastructure Alliance ( AIIC ), which advocates for policies related to AI, will announce several commitments on Wednesday. Members of the alliance pledge to cover the energy costs of their own data center operations, fund community public institutions such as schools and hospitals, reduce water resource consumption, and give priority to hiring local employees.

At the time AIIC released these "Community Principles," polls showed that in the past 12 months, public dissatisfaction with data centers in the United States has been increasing. The vast majority of voters from both the Democratic and Republican parties expressed disapproval of the construction of new data centers in their neighborhoods.

According to research, this year more than 1,000 communities across the United States have attempted to enact moratoriums or other restrictive policies targeting the infrastructure of AI. Data from the research project Data Center Watch under the security company AI 10a Labs shows that in the first half of 2026, these policies and various protest activities have affected over 100 data center projects, with a total project scale of 200 billion US dollars.

As the importance of this issue increases in key Senate races, more and more candidates from both major parties are taking a stance against the expansion of data centers. Mike Rogers, a candidate in Michigan who has Trump's backing, is calling for a one-year suspension of data center construction; meanwhile, Ken Paxton, a candidate supported by Trump in Texas, vows to cancel subsidies for such projects.

At the same time, Trump refused to heed the demands of some members of his MAGA camp to limit the construction of data centers, stating that those who oppose such projects want the United States to "regress and fall into poverty."

AIIC members include venture capital giants Andreessen Horowitz, Digital Realty, Entergy, Google, Lumen, Meta, Microsoft, QTS, and PG &E. Some members have already committed to increasing the transparency of data center projects and involving the community in the construction process.

On Tuesday local time, Trump had lunch with technology executives from companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, NVIDIA, and Palantir. After the meeting, Trump stated that these corporate executives promised to "work in collaboration with local communities" and mentioned that "the forms of cooperation could include supplying oil and gas resources, investing in education, and providing economic assistance to the people."

He also said that the residents living around the data centers "have become very wealthy."

The U.S. Senate will also vote this week on a proposal that would require AI companies to bear the increased energy costs.
