CHANDLER, Ariz. On October 13, 2026 / PRNewswire / -- VIAVI Solutions Inc. (Nasdaq ticker: VIAV) Today, the U.S. Army Threat Systems Management Office ( Threat Systems Management Office, abbreviated as TSMO ) announced that, under the Portfolio Acquisition Executive C2 / CC2 framework, it has selected VIAVI's T/ Rx software-defined transceiver system to provide an electromagnetic spectrum ( EMS ) environment for the test sites that the U.S. Army will soon open to the private sector.
This selection supports the 'Test Site Private Sector Initiative' (Test Range Private Industry Initiative). The initiative aims to open five top-tier test site facilities to commercial developers for the development of drones, anti-drone systems, long-range firepower, and low-cost interceptors, in order to support rapid and scaled innovation. This move by the Army allows companies, including those without government contracts, to access the test site infrastructure, thereby accelerating the development of emerging combat technologies.
Conducting real tests in these test fields depends on whether it is possible to recreate the contested electromagnetic environments encountered on modern battlefields. TSMO will utilize the T/ Rx system of VIAVI to meet a large portion of these requirements, leveraging the industry-leading capabilities of this system in monitoring, recording, analyzing, and transmitting data at EMS.
VIAVI Solutions, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Aerospace and Defense, stated: "The Army's initiative to expand test sites is precisely the kind of procurement reform that can accelerate the delivery of capabilities to combat personnel. VIAVI We are honored to have been selected by TSMO to provide these test sites with an electromagnetic spectrum environment that simulates a real combat scenario. The design goal of Rx is to offer the complexity and programmability required for modern testing activities, and we look forward to supporting the development of the next generation of drones, anti-drone systems, and interceptors."
As one of the designated locations for the "Test Site Private Sector Initiative," Camp Grayling conducted a periodic electromagnetic unreliability test in September 2026. The T/ Rx system at VIAVI provided EMS complexity that was generated on demand, with the aim of recreating the contested electronic warfare conditions observed on the Ukrainian battlefield and to assist developers in fortifying drone and anti-drone systems accordingly.
The T/ Rx system is a compact and robust commercial software-defined transceiver that integrates signal generation and acquisition into a single unit suitable for field deployment. This system can operate within a wide range of instantaneous bandwidths, enabling test site operators to create complex and diverse electromagnetic environments as needed. It generates representative waveforms, frequency-variable emission sources, and multi-signal scenarios to replicate real-world conditions subject to competition for EMS.
