Apple is seriously making its way into the smart home sector. On Tuesday, the company unveiled new Apple Home Collection, which includes a new smart door lock, video doorbell, thermostat, temperature sensor, and a range of security cameras.
These new devices are designed to be used in conjunction with HomeView. HomeView is Apple's new smart home hub, which can be used to control connected accessories and interact with Apple's software.
These new smart home accessories may help Apple compete better with Amazon Ring and Google Nest, the latter two being established players in the field of connected home security. The related products will be launched in December.
Apple stated that these devices were created in collaboration with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. This move is quite intriguing for the company, as Apple has long been keen to develop and support every type of smart home accessory on its own.
Among them, the smart door lock priced at $349.95 stands out particularly as it supports Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology. UWB is a wireless technology that, compared to traditional Bluetooth, enables more precise short-range detection. This means that the door lock may be able to recognize when an authorized user approaches and automatically unlock it, thereby reducing the need for users to take out their phones or physical keys.
At the same time, the $249.95 wired video doorbell will allow residents to view what's outside, monitor visitors, and receive notifications when someone approaches their residence. When someone rings the bell, Apple devices such as HomeView, HomePod, HomePod, and mini will emit a notification sound. Users will also receive notifications on iPhone or iPad.
As for the temperature sensor, it can provide insights into the environmental conditions of a single room, helping users to identify temperature differences between different areas and make adjustments accordingly.
In terms of security, Apple has also launched indoor and outdoor cameras, as well as a floodlight camera priced at $399.95 that combines external lighting with video surveillance. This series of cameras features real-time viewing, motion detection, intelligent alerts, and video storage capabilities.
