Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell stated that as debates rage outside about the potential threats this rapidly evolving technology may pose to humanity, artificial intelligence models "must have security guarantees and controls."

"I believe that we have always had technologies that can bring great results, as well as some less favorable outcomes. You know, fire can provide warmth for your home, but it can also burn down an entire village. So that's not good. Therefore, we must have safety measures and control," Dell said in an interview with David Faber on Tuesday.

Dell stated, "There is room for the government to play a role," and companies that develop AI tools also need to set "limited permissions."

He refused to provide details about the government's specific role, stating only that he "is not a policy maker."

In recent weeks, researchers and industry experts have been discussing the potentially catastrophic consequences of self-improving AI models. The controversy stems from former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who, after leaving his position, published a warning on September 8th stating that cutting-edge laboratories are "gambling with our lives" in the race towards superintelligence.

Thereafter, CEOs of technology companies, including Dario Amodei (which includes Anthropic) and Sam Altman (which includes OpenAI), supported calls for strengthened regulation and a general slowdown in the development of cutting-edge models. However, the Trump administration has consistently opposed coordinated slowdowns or other regulatory measures.

U.S. President Donald Trump hosted a lunch meeting with leaders of AI on September 29th. At the end of the meeting, corporate executives signed a "morally binding" document, agreeing to self-regulate the safety of their products with the help of external evaluators.

The White House document makes it unlikely that further federal-level regulations will be introduced before the mid-term elections in November, which are just a few weeks away. The opposition to AI and data center construction has reached a fever pitch, and this is also a key issue that may determine which party will control Congress in the last two years of Trump's presidency.

Dell also mentioned the growing opposition to data centers, stating that more active discussions around this issue "are a good thing."

"We will discuss this matter with our customers and also listen to what they are doing to address it. Of course, we can also take some measures to make the system more efficient and reduce energy consumption," said Dell. "So we are all working together to tackle this issue. I don't think this will pose a significant obstacle by 2027."
