Key Points
- BlackRock's quarterly net inflow reached $205 billion
- Despite strong demand for ETF, Dow Jones' stock price still tumbled.
- Cash outflows reveal the divergence in the growth trends of asset management.
On October 14th, although both BlackRock and Bank of America Merrill Lynch reported growth in managed assets, the stock market reactions were distinctly different. This indicates that investors are placing increasing emphasis not only on the growth of asset size itself but also on the quality of customer capital inflows.
BlackRock (NYSE : BLK) rose by about 3% after releasing its third-quarter financial report, driven by net inflows of $205 billion and a record $15.5 trillion in managed assets. Meanwhile, Bank of America (NYSE : STT) fell by about 7% in pre-market trading due to revenue falling short of expectations, and cash outflows offsetting most of the growth in its ETF business.
At the time of this divergence, the inflation rate in the United States was 3.7% in September, putting pressure on the overall stock market. Therefore, the positive reaction of stock prices after BlackRock's financial report release is particularly noteworthy.
BlackRock manages assets worth $15.5 trillion; stock price rises
According to BlackRock's quarterly results, this investment management company achieved revenue of approximately $7.75 billion, a year-on-year increase of 19%.
Earnings per share increased by 38% to $15.93 after adjustment, exceeding analysts' forecast of around $14.13. The total managed assets reached $15.49 trillion, compared to $13.46 trillion in the same period last year.
More importantly, BlackRock attracted $205 billion in net customer inflows this quarter, indicating that demand for its various investment products remains strong.
Among them, iShares and ETF recorded approximately $134.5 billion in inflows, with fixed-income products attracting $78.2 billion.
BlackRock's performance also highlights the company's expansion into the private equity market, driven by its increasing involvement in AI infrastructure financing.
However, the company has recently decided to reduce its exposure to US stocks, which also indicates that its investment outlook is separate from its own operational performance.
Why did the stock price drop by 7% after Nomura's financial report?
Mitsubishi UFJ Bank's quarterly performance initially seemed relatively robust.
According to the company's third-quarter financial report, its revenue increased by 13% year-on-year to approximately $4 billion, and the adjusted earnings per share were $3.69.
However, revenue fell short of analysts' expectations of around $4.04 billion, and the company's cash flow data presented a less optimistic picture.
Tofu's ETF products attracted $68 billion in capital inflows, including funds under its SPDR investment brand. However, approximately $62 billion in cash outflows reduced the overall net inflow to just $7 billion.
In contrast, the net inflow in the same period last year was 26 billion US dollars, while in the previous quarter it was 114 billion US dollars.
Nevertheless, Sumitomo Mitsui's total managed assets have increased to approximately $6.3 trillion, with custodial and administrative assets reaching $59.2 trillion.
The importance of this distinction lies in the fact that even if the funds from new customers are relatively weak, an increase in market valuation may still lead to a rise in the managed asset size.
What does the divergence between BlackRock and Dow Jones Fidelity mean for investors?
The different market reactions after the financial reports of the two companies indicate that when Wall Street evaluates asset management companies, it does not solely consider the total scale of investments they manage.
BlackRock has benefited from more diversified capital inflows, stronger profit growth, and expanding investment management revenues. TD Ameritrade also reported a record asset size, but weaker net inflows and revenue that fell short of expectations, raising questions in the market about the sustainability of its short-term growth.
Both companies remain important participants in the ETF industry, and each of them offers products that track the S&P 500 index as well as other widely followed indices.
However, higher yields on U.S. Treasury bonds and concerns in the market about the Federal Reserve's possible further tightening of policies could affect how investors allocate their funds among stocks, bonds, and cash.
