Apple updates the "App Review Guidelines," explicitly including private images generated by "AI" without the consent of the individuals involved in clause 1.2 within the prohibited scope. Apple also strengthens the review of user-generated content, "nudify" applications, and the "review first, then unlock" policy. Additionally, Apple expands the ban on applications that facilitate human trafficking or child exploitation and states that it will take measures such as removing such applications from the store or terminating cooperation with developers who violate these guidelines.

News from the IT community on October 17th: Apple Company updated its App Review Guidelines yesterday (October 16th). In the newly revised clause 1.2, they have strengthened regulations for AI content creation applications, explicitly including private images generated by AI without the consent of the individuals involved in the images within the prohibited scope.

IT's home attaches the revised content as follows:

1.2 User-generated content

For App that contains user-generated content, there are specific challenges that need to be addressed, such as intellectual property infringement, dissemination of private images without consent, and anonymous bullying. To prevent abuse, App that includes user-generated content or social networking services must meet the following conditions:

  • Adopt corresponding methods to filter offensive content in order to prevent such content from being published on App.
  • Establish a mechanism to report offensive content and respond promptly when issues arise.
  • If a user publishes offensive content, their qualification to use the service may be revoked.
  • Publish contact information so that users can get in touch with you.

Technology media 9to5Mac pointed out that the direct background for this adjustment is a series of controversies surrounding App Store over the past year. The Technology Transparency Project discovered dozens of AI "nudification" applications and noted that search suggestions and advertisements for App Store also directed users to such applications; subsequently, officials in San Francisco requested Apple to remove 8 applications that could generate private images without consent.

In addition, users have complained that the Grok chatbot of xAI has been used to create nude or sexually explicit deep-faked images; earlier this year, Apple warned xAI that if such content continued to be allowed, it would remove Grok from App Store. xAI subsequently added protective measures, and only after updating the version was it approved again.

Apple has also added 25.19 new guidelines, prohibiting apps from hiding their true functions during the review process and then adding harmful features such as "exposure" ( nudify ) after approval. This practice of "getting approved first, then unlocking features later" is known as "bait marketing," and in the future, it may lead to apps being removed from the store, and developers may also have their Apple Developer Program qualifications terminated.

In addition, Apple will extend the scope of applications that it prohibits from facilitating human trafficking or child exploitation to include alternative application distribution channels, and stated that it "will not hesitate" to take measures such as removing such applications from the store or terminating cooperation with developers who violate these regulations.
